What exactly is Equine Sports Massage Therapy?

Equine Sports Massage Therapy is the therapeutic application of hands-on massage techniques for the purpose of increasing circulation, relaxing muscle spasms, relieving tension, enhancing muscle tone, and increasing range of motion in high performance horses.

Traditionally Equine Massage has often been projected as a holistic or all natural alternative therapy.  While many elements of massage are considered holistic in nature, massage therapy for the performance horse can be likened  to the same treatment many human professional athletes receive in the locker room both before and after a game or big event.  Coupled with the knowledge and expertise of an entire team of caregivers; the massage therapist is only one cog in the wheel to creating a champion.

Why Should Your Horse Receive a Massage?

Simply put, your horse is an athlete; regardless of what job it must perform.

But fitness is  extremely difficult to achieve and maintain in today's horse show environment.

Think about it. Few, if any, human athletes feel prepared to go “full-bore” in competition without spending a large amounts of training time doing exactly what they do. Runners run, dancers dance, skiers ski, and football players receive a lot of rough contact, even in practice. Keeping the specific body parts used in competition toned and ready to handle its rigors means being able to handle intensive training, which often requires additional, specific fitness work. Often this kind of training results in soreness, tight muscles, and a general feeling of tiredness.

Its the same for your horse.  Massage is an amazing way to help keep your athlete feeling good and performing to the best of his/her ability.  We at Superior Equine Sports Massage Therapy strive to do our best to bring out the best in your equine athlete.

Some of the many documented benefits of massage are:

  • Enhances muscle tone and range of motion.

  • Helps to balance and maintain the whole body in better physical condition

  • Eases muscle spasms.

  • Stimulates circulation

  • Generally improves the disposition of the animal

The horse is an amazing athlete. Because of his speed, adaptability and athleticism, he is our companion in many disciplines. His powerful muscle tissue comprises anywhere from 45% to 55% of his body mass, depending on the breed. In addition to all his physical attributes, the horse’s intelligence makes him our most treasured domesticated large animal, and he shares our passion for equine sports.

Because you rely on your equine athlete, you want him to feel good and ready for training, competition, or simple trail riding. Acupressure makes this possible by providing him with an optimal flow of energy and blood through his body.   We utilize acupressure within our massage sessions to help pinpoint potential areas of tightness and enhance the overall benefit of the massage session.

Why Kinesiology Taping for Equine and what is Kinesiology tape?

We utilize only kinesiology therapy tape designed specifically for horses. Depending upon its application, kinesiology tape can be can be used as either a sole or adjunctive treatment in equine therapy. It can reduce or control pain, manage swelling or edema, increase joint range of motion and muscle function, and maintain a level of functionality and comfort for the horse whether you're competing or recovering from injury.

It can also be used on riders to maintain functionality and comfort in training and assist with recovery. The inclusion of Kinesiology method in equine training programs has offered equestrian professionals the opportunity to increase the potential for successful athletic performance for both horse and rider.

We use Kinesiology Tape to:
